Luganda Department

Introduction
The Luganda Department is headed by Mr.Kanyerezi Erisam, also the Director of Studies. He holds a B.A in Education majoring in History, and Luganda, and an M.A in Education Management, Makerere University. He is in charge of two Luganda teachers namely Mrs. Ssewanonda Nabaliisa Irene(B.A Education Luganda and C.R.E) and Mrs. Mukasa Mwesigwa(B.A.Education Luganda and C.R.E).They are all Makerere University graduates.

Achievements for the year 2007
2.1Mrs. Sewannonda Nabaliisa Irene represented the department and was facilitated at the Luganda Teachers Workshop at Makerere University in June 2007.
2.2The two O-Level students attended a seminar at Hanna Mixed School on 14th July 2007.
2.3The Department has not acquired new books this year as we are still adjusting to the new policy of the procurement. Despite this Luganda Department has been building capacity in stocking the Library since 1994 and there over sixty titles that provide a variety of reading materials to an interested student.

2.4The members of staff have continued to teach the junior classes with enthusiasm. We await the 2007 UACE Results of UNEB.

2.5The Luganda textbooks are in the Main Library and the librarians administer the borrowing and returning by the students and teachers.

2.6 The Head of Department supervised the schemes of work ,set tests and moderated them.
2.7 Supplementary tests were done in January 2007,three sets of B.O.T.T.S were set and marked, three sets of M.O.T.T.S were also done in addition to the End of Term Examinations

2.8We were able to follow up students that might have skipped the tests and ensure that they do not return to their homes with gaps in their reports.
2.9. Two out of the six students that did Luganda in U.C.E 2006 were retained by the school to do PCB and PCM, namely Kakoto Denis and Mwanje the current Assistant Prep Prefect. They scored distinctions.
2.10 We worked closely with the organizers of Music ,Dance and Drama to ensure that Luganda poems are an integral part of the Competitions.

4. Challenges
4.1It should be pointed out here that the department went through the tremors of the transfers of teachers in 2004, and the number of students opting for the subject started fluctuating since then.
4.2The big size of classes in junior classes meant big marking loads and less time to pay keen interest to the individual problems of the students.
4.3The ratio of textbooks to students in junior classes is still low and yet a language is mainly acquired through reading.
4.4The Department has no official room as a home for visual and other teaching aids.

5. Appreciation
The Head would not have registered any of the above achievements without the total support of the Headmaster. The Headmaster,Mr.G.W.Semivule ensured that Luganda as an African language was well facilitated and was well marketed in the various fora. The Headmaster’s persistence to ensure that students who deliberately fail a subject must do supplementaries in it would reduce the negative attitude towards the language. In all this he was supported by the Deputy Academics who kept a supervisory eye to ensure that the policy is not defied by the parents and the students in the holidays.
Appreciation goes to all the staff for the cooperation they rendered to the Head of Department and for the teaching and marking they did throughout the year.
Most important of all, to the Almighty God, for giving us the energies and grace to serve in this Institution.
