Physics Department

Introduction
This is the third largest department after English and Mathematics in terms of students’ numbers. Physics is a compulsory subject at O level. The department has three laboratories two of which are connected to the internet. TheTeachers are encouraged to use, and have started using, ICT in teaching. However, this being a relatively new method, teachers are realising the necessity to modify their lesson preparations to incorporate this aspect. All the teachers have the necessary ICT literacy required to start off.
Lessons are taught both in the laboratories and in the classrooms.

O Level
S1, S2 and S3 are allocated 4 periods per week
S4 has 5 periods a week
The teacher decides which of the periods to use for practical work. Most of the practicals are in groups, except in S4 when candidates have to prepare for the national examinations. Here experiments are carried out individually

A Level
S5: This is divided into three groups according to the combination, namely: PCB, PCM and PEM; and each is taught separately. Each group is allocated 13 periods a week: 10 for theory and 3 for practicals. The 10 theory lessons are also broken down as follows:

Heat 2
Optics 2
Electricity 3
Mechanics 3

Each topic has a different teacher for a group. So a class interacts with at least 4 teachers a week. The one teaching optics takes also the 3 practical lessons.

S6: The groups continue as they were in S5. 3 periods a week are allocated for practical work and 10 for theory, broken down into two: 5 for mechanics and heat, 5 for electricity and modern physics. A class meets 2 or 3 teachers a week.
