REPORT ON THE TRIP TO TURKEY FOR THE IDEA DEBATE COMPETITIONS IN TURKEY BY NABWETEME ELIZ KEVIN, S.4.C, GRACE HOUSE

It was Monday July 18th 2011 that the Ugandan Youth Forum Team set off for a two week trip to Turkey. The team comprised of five members i.e. Mr. Okot Patrick our coac from Nvara S.S, Mr. Muhindo Johncation from the National Debate Council, Amukidosi Jeremiah an S.6 vacist from Bishop Cyprian, Luzira, Mwesigwa Onesmus an S.5 student at Mbarara High School and I.

We left the airport at around 4:00 p.m and made two stop overs. The first was in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for 1 hour and 30 minutes after which we travelled to Dubai for 8 hours.

We arrived in Turkey on Tuesday at around 3:00 p.m and shuttles were hired to take us to the Hotel where our Fortnight was to be spent. “Turkey is beautiful” was all we could exclaim despite the great alteration in temperature since it was hotter there. Istanbul, the city in which we resided, was clean, highly developed and almost everything was in Turkish – posters and billboards inclusive!

Our team was a strong one – not to blow my own trumpet. We did our best and faced those teams that seemed like Goliaths and we seemed like little David and at the end of it all, with God’s Grace we overcame them. Our team lost two rounds; one to Estonia and the other to Maldova, but since every cloud has its silver lining, we were able to win four rounds against; Czech Republic (3-0), Romania (3-0), Canada (2-1) and Zimbabwe (2-1).

We were blessed to be among the best 16 breakthrough teams out of the over 60 teams. As the only African team remaining, we were not only carrying the Ugandan flag, but also the African flag. It was awesome and humbling to know that we were debating for our continent.

In the octal finals, our team faced the New York team which won us and that was the end of the journey for us – so sad! All in all we learnt a lot, the New Yorkers emerged the overall winners of the tournament, but they confessed that we were the toughest team that they faced and could not believe they had won us thus giving our team credit.

The second week had mixed team tournaments where they would mix participants from different countries. For example my team consisted of a Californian girl and a Turkish girl. It was a nice way of socializing and learning. We had daily debate lessons on skills in argumentation, cross examination and case building.

On the lighter side of the tournament, we always had fun activities in the evenings like a 3 hour boat trip on the sea, talent night, cultural expo night, visit to the museum and historical peninsula, karaoke night, movie night, evening at the seaside and Bagdhat street, to Beycoz and Akakent campus of Doga Koleji, Amusement Park and so many other activities. Generally, it was a whole lot of fun! The hotel premises were all open to us free of charge for example the swimming pool, gym, sauna and gardens.

I made so many friends and learnt different cultures for example how to greet in Estonia (Tere), Cosovo (Siye), Turkish (Melhabe), Lithuanian (Labos). It was agreat experience and one I will never forget!!! We departed on Monday August 1st 2011 and my roommates and I were in tears since good bye is one of the hardest words to say – as always stated.

MY BROOKS EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE

In 3rd term 2010 i applied to the exchange programme and at the beginning of this year, i was called upon to attend an interview. The exchange programme at Budo is only open to Senior Four students in their third term. It is restricted to only Brooks school USA, with only two representatives.

When i found out that i had been accepted to go to the States for eight weeks,i was extremely ecstatic! However the reality did not sink in until we were on our first fllight from Entebbe to Heathrow,London.

We were in a relatively empty flight so almost every one was stretched out in the seat and some were sleeping. It was such an interesting view, looking out the window that i could not take a nap. Below was a desert ,i felt terrified and curious at once but this forced me to believe that i was in a different place, not home.

When we arrived in the States, i did not have any expectations , maybe i was too tired to have any but i was ready for anything. The people i met impressed me alot. I was warmly welcomed by the lovely girls of Hottinger West who got out of their beds past midnight to meet me, the Exchange student. I quickly  learnt that there were many differences between life at Budo and life at Brooks.

At Brooks, a normal day would coniss of me waking up at around 7:30am take a hot shower with running water and then walking to breakfast where  i would atleast eat a fruit, a chocolate chip muffin or a very nice pancake with syrup and a cup of cold milk.Next i would walk to the link to go attend classes wearing a skirt and shirt or a dress of my choice..

We had a number of parties which i enjoyed, shopping sprees, movie nights, gospel nights, visiting places like Boston, Washington, Lawrence, the beach at Antlantic Ocean and then mountain climbing in New Jersey. It was such a  fun experience because we were 10 exchange student, 2 from Botswana, 4 from Kenya, 2 from Spain and  2 from Uganda Mugabi Elvis and i, Natukunda Sharlot.

Despite the many differences in the daily life here compared to Brooks, students are pretty similar, because we listen to the same music, read alot of the same books, fancy the same celebrities, and enjoy many more similar things. May be their fitness level is much better because sports are compulsory  and well conducted.

Even though so much was different from what i ate, where i slept, which subjects i studied, how my laundry was done, what end of the world i was in for example attending sunday chapel at 7:30 pm. May be it did not make a difference since the students at Brooks were just as friendly if not more friendly than those at Budo. I made many friends who inspired and indulged  my madness.

The time spent and experience i had at Brooks left me changed and more grown up than i can never go back to my old dimensions. It was not that easy being in a country not my own and with no one to strictly watch over you but now i recognise small and big changes in my daily routine and my view of the world.

Therefore; no matter what i got from my experiences, i will never forget and will carry with  me for the rest of my life.

Natukunda Sharlot

MOMENT OF TRUTH AS SCHOOLS RUGBY ENTERS KNOCKOUT

The coaches have spoken lots of words, the teachers have changed many programmes to accommodate the games, the top schools have had near misses, but all that now comes to naught as the Coke Schools Rugby enters the knockout stages where a bounce of the ball, a missed tackle, or a silly yellow card will condemn the teams to an agonizing one year wait for silverware.

Both leagues i.e. the National Division (2nd Division) and the Super Division (1st Division) enter the knockout weekend on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th March 2011.

SUPER DIVISION

After 7 weeks of tough qualifier group games, the teams are now set for the semi finals that will take place on Sunday 27th March 2011 at Kampala Rugby Club.

UNDER-14

In this category, King’s College, Budo was in a bullish mood sweeping all competition away and will play against Namilyango College who finished 2nd  in group B.Kick off- 9:30am

In the other semi final, we shall have St.Mary’s Kisubi playing against Kyambogo College who finished distant 2nd in group A. Kick-off – 10:30am

UNDER-16

At this level, King’s College, Budo again put light years between them and their group rivals topping the group with ease. They will play St.Mary’s College Kisubi. Kickoff 11:30pm

In the other semi, Namilyango College will lock horns with fast rising London College. Kick off- 12:30pm.

SENIORS

King’s College, Budo Vs Namilyango College – 3:00pm

Namilyango had to grit their teeth to grind out a hard fought 6-00 win over SMACK and set themselves on course for the semis.

The 7 times champions will rely very heavily on inspirational hooker, the burly Alphonso Kishato as well as scrum half Peter Wanyama if they are to overcome their fierce rivals King’s College, Budo in this semi.

Budo on the other hand have shown no resemblance to the team that demolished all in their wake last season as they strode to their 5th schools title.

They have to hope that master coach, Sam Ahamya can conjure up some magic if they are to make it to the final. Budo will however rely on their dependable captain, Marvin Odongo, for those monstrous runs and uncompromising defence.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS AGENCY NEWS FOR THE WEEK ENDING 25TH-FEB-2011

SENIOR ONE AND FIVE  STUDENTS REPORT

Senior One  and Five students reported to school on 21 February and 25 February  2011 respectively . The cricket pitch could be seen packed with dozens of cars as parents ushered their children into secondary school  life. This has led to the introduction of an interesting mess system due to the larger than usual intake of form 1 and form 5 students.

With students wondering how they will cope with the new mess system, and the increased school population, the administration is left in anticipation of  2010 UACE Results.

MISCELLANEOUS

Quote of the Week:

I am longing for a time when we shall develop a sense of shame. Mr Ntanzi

Verse of the Week:

” Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed…” Ephesians 4:29

Thumbs Up:

Successful admission of Form Five students.

Thumbs Down:

Inconveniencing Mess System.

Did You Know?

EDITORIAL:

We have so far gone one month deep into the term only to welcome S1 and s5 the previous week. We saw some farmiliar faces especially among the s 5’s that we didnt expect. However, we wish to welcome them and hope that they will adapt to our great institution.

Litter as always has been a concern within the school ,but we will not hesitate to shift the responsibility from the administration to the student body to keep the coompound sparkling.

One common  thing about litter is that it is caused by people. We should not leave behind the spirit of patriotism. As they say, the greatest mind is weaker than the strongest pen.

We advise the Mess Prefect and Department to organise the mess shifts and print them for the students to remember. We do not understand the logic of having candidatres in second shift, and are quite conviced that this is definitely a false move.

It turns out that the election period has affected the post election period since load shedding has become another school programme where electricity is off every five minutes during the night. We hope this stops in the near future.
